"Templates for Limitless Fields of Grass" is inspired by a project of the same name by the artist Gary Kachadourian, a booklet containing a few drawings of blades of grass that you’re supposed to photocopy enough times to fill the walls of a room. I was struck by the idea that something so expansive, dense, and unpredictable -- a literally inhabitable space -- could be made by replicating just a few basic elements. So this piece, similarly, is sort of an exercise in trying to build something vast, immersive, and disorienting by multiplying a couple small and simple ideas. It's the closing track on an album about appreciating expressions of nature and wildness in the built environment, and in a way, it's about how little irregularities and tiny changes can make even an artificial and repetitive structure feel alive, expressive, organic, and real.
